Summer is in full swing now!
Be sure to take time to
protect your home from potential
water damage and high water
bills by performing these inspections:
-
Test your main
valve (outside of the home)
by shutting it off and turning
it back on again.
-
Test the valve
on the water heater, and the
emergency shut off valves at
each fixture (toilets, washing
machine, faucets, etc.)
-
Visually inspect
all the supply lines. Look for
leaks, calcium deposits, kinked
lines and worn spots. Do this
on ALL water outlets. Check
the water lines to the washing
machine. It's a simple task
that can eliminate serious water
damage in your home!
-
Flush the water
heater. Due to extremely hard
water in our area, you should
do this at least once per year.
Water heaters, without annual
maintenance, typically last
only four to seven years. Electric
water heaters require more frequent
maintenance than gas water heaters.
Check your water heater's top,
sides and bottom for signs of
corrosion or leakage.
-
Make
sure the
flapper inside the toilet tank
is seating
properly and water is not constantly
running
to keep the tank filled. Rub
the flapper;
if black residue comes off
on your
hands, replace the flapper.
-
Keep
your garbage
disposal sharp and clean by
running water
and adding a few cups
of ice while
running the disposal. NEVER
run the disposal
without water running, and
be sure to turn
the disposal off before
turning the water
off.
-
Do
not use any caustic
drain cleaners
to maintain or
clear any drain
lines. Only use
environmentally
friendly, hazard
free, non-caustic,
consumer safe,
industry recommended
drain cleaners.
Most caustic
drain cleaners
cause damage
to your drain
lines and/or
create leaks!
-
Replace
outside hose bibs
with easy-to-use
washerless, 1/4 turn
shut off valves.
-
Consider
protecting
your home
with a
high limit
valve
to eliminate
pressure
spiking,
both in
the summer
and winter.
-
Install
electronic
water
alarms
at
each
fixture.
They
will
sound
when
water
is
leaking.
