Good lighting is everything. It not only lights up a room so you can see, but it sets an ambience and the and mood and even creates an effect on the colors in the room.

Here are some things to consider when setting the stage for lighting throughout your home.

Ceilings. How high are your ceilings? Knowing your ceiling heights is necessary when determining and selecting any hanging light fixtures.  A good rule to follow is having the bottom of the light hang about 12 to 20 inches below a standard 8-foot ceiling. Each additional foot, just add 3 inches.

Have a plan. If you are remodeling or updating electrical work in your home, or simply updating your lighting it’s always a good idea to have a plan.  Consider what types of lights you desire including style and ambiance. Look at your room design what would match or fit. If you want to hang a pendant but don’t want to change the electrical setup, you can simply swag cords over a bar or hook for a cool style that’s inexpensive.

Different locations. Try different types of lighting such as wall sconces or uplighting to create softer looks and avoiding harsh downlighting.

Lightbulbs.The type of lightbulb you use can be as important as the fixture itself. There are all kinds of bulbs from Halogen, fluorescent, and LED bulbs. You can also choose from a range of warm or cool hues depending on the type of glow against the color on your walls.

Stairs.You can really add a beautiful feature that also adds safety with lights to stair risers. Add lighting from the sides of stairs or embed them in the risers as a design element.
