It’s that time of year for lights, Christmas trees, and light up yard decorations. During this wonderful time, be sure to practice safety when it comes to your electrical usage and outlets.

We’ve got a few tips for holiday safety below to keep you and your loved ones safe while you enjoy the holiday time with them:

Check your decorations and lights. Be sure to inspect your lights and outdoor decorations for damaged wires, loose connections and damaged sockets. These issues can cause a serious shock or even a fire.

Watch the overload. Be mindful of overloading your electrical outlets. A good rule of thumb is to plug in only one high-wattage item in each outlet.

Water the tree. If you have a live tree with electrical lights on it, keep the tree fresh by watering it daily.  Dry trees can be a serious fire hazard in any home or office.

Battery-operated. Consider using battery-operated candles and other decorations. They save on dealing with cords and provide a safer alternative.

Keep away from heat sources. Many decorations, including your tree, can become combustible if placed too close to a heat source. Be mindful of radiators, heater vents, and fireplaces.

Watch those cords. Make sure your cords are not stuck under furniture or forced into small spaces like under doors or near heat sources.

Turn it off. Be sure to turn off all lights and decorations and extinguish all candles before you go to bed or leave the house.

Stay in the kitchen. Never leave cooking equipment in the kitchen unattended. Unattended ovens and stoves pose a serious fire hazard
